I finished this bunny and went out to get some good pictures of her and to my surprise there must have been a big hatching of mosquitoes. They were crazy insane and I couldn't stand still enough to take a good picture for all the mosquitoes trying to bite me. They were all over my bunny as well, I had to slap them off of her too. :-) The pictures turned out ok, except for the mosquito that wouldn't leave her ear.

Back to work needle felting after several weeks spent working on Vacation Bible School at my Church. Vacation Bible School has been a highlight of my summer for many years! I have been VBS director at our church for several years, and I love to go a little crazy on the decorating end! I also make sure I put 100% into every aspect of the entire program. The kids love it, I love it and we have a wonderful week worshiping Jesus together.

Ruddy Duck inspiration

I have been trying to get good pictures of the Ruddy Ducks on our pond for weeks. They are usually to far out when I have my camera along. When I don't have my camera they are right up by the road. I took these pictures on the way home from my niece's graduation. This is the inspiration for my latest sculpture.

I look forward to the ducks arriving every spring. I was excited to see a duck that I had not seen before with a thick neck and blue bill. I went home and found out he was a Ruddy Duck. The next time I was able to see him he was doing a courtship display with his tail up and bobbing his head over and over. I am happy to say they are still here and I stop to make sure I find them everyday. Well, needless to say I couldn't wait to get done with my current felting projects so that I could start on a Ruddy Duck. Here he is with his tail up, now you just need to imagine him bobbing his head up and down and he will bring a smile to your face.

I just had to post my newest bird picture. I found this morning dove as I was taking some steaks out to the grill. He was sitting so still I didn't even have to be quick about getting my camera. I learned that the males sit on the eggs during the day and the female at night. Morning doves mate for life. Cool!

The day was so beautiful that I just had to put down my felting needles and head outside with the camera. I suppose this has something to do with felting anyway as this is how I get my inspiration. Photography was my first love before needle felting, and it has been a wonderful skill to have when selling online. I also enjoy bird watching, especially in the spring after a long horrible winter. This first bird showed up yesterday. Every spring I set out oranges for the Orioles and they come back year after year. Orioles are the only birds that have enjoyed the oranges in the past. So I was surprised this year when this bird showed up. He goes about eating the orange differently than the Oriole. He attacks it as if it were his prey, and pulls it apart very roughly. The orioles don't think much of him and chase him off and he sits on the deck railing patiently waiting for his chance at more orange. I have been curious about this bird and cannot find him in my bird books. I tried searching online and gave up as it was taking way to much time to search through so many birds. If you are familiar with this bird, I would love to know more about him!

I was walking through the trees in the sheep pasture when I heard this little guy scampering around above me. I took several pictures of him scurrying around and and to my delight he stopped right above me to have a quick look at me and went jumping through the trees again. I quickly snapped this picture. He is so cute! I had not realized the long claws that squirrels have until I took this picture. I am thinking I may have to try and felt something this cute! :-)

I have been around beef cattle all my life, but there are many differences in the composition of beef and dairy cows! We have been experiencing winter and spring all at the same time here. Last Wednesday we had a terrible blizzard with a foot of snow and this week we are finally seeing some of the huge drifts of snow shrink away. It has only gotten into the 40's and we are all waiting for warmer weather. While impatiently waiting for spring I have been making Spring bunnies and baby chicks. I had to throw in a snowman this week, because it seems I can never make enough snowman to keep up when the Christmas season comes around. So as much as I hated to even think about snow I made another snowman.

There are baby lambs at the Bear Creek Ranch. 6 lambs so far. They have been keeping me busy out in the barn night and day. I will post pictures of the cute little lambs soon. It has been cold and we still have several feet of snow behind the barn so the lambs have been confined to the inside of the barn to keep them warm and dry. It is dark and not very good for picture taking in the barn so I am waiting until the snow melts a little and they can run outside and play.

My Bunny kit was featured in the Etsy Finds email and ever since I have had interest in purchasing bunnies that are already made. So I have made a few. I made a little sheep as well to add to my Etsy shop.

I finished this little white sheep this week. I have only a couple more custom orders to finish and then I will be done with my list that I have been working on since the beginning of January. Just in time for lambing! We will soon have little baby lambs and they may come as early as next Sunday. We have a lot of snow on the ground still, many, many feet actually. It is supposed to get into the 40's this week so hopefully some of it will melt. Before the lambs come we will hopefully have the ewe's sheared. (I haven't heard back from the sheep shearer yet!) It will be crazy the next few weeks, but it is so exciting! I will be sure to share some pictures with you. I am working on a black Cocker Spaniel right now and the last custom order will be a brown Romney sheep. Then I can move on to some projects that I have been looking forward to making. A moose? We will see.

In my last wood duck post I was concerned about the neck being a little to long. Well, I decided that it had to be shortened.

I chopped off his head with a sharp knife and then sliced off about a 1/4 inch from his neck.

Then I felted it right back into place.

Now I am busy poking dots into his chest!

He is almost finished, I have a few more details to add.

I am working on a custom order for a wood duck. I have some progress photos to share with you. I am hoping to dye some wool to try and get a deeper maroon color for his breast. (that can be added later) I am also thinking his neck has gotten to be a little long. If I decide to shorten it I will have to share pictures with you on how that it is done! Most people are horrified. :-) It could be that it won't appear as long when I get his hood on. I shall see as I move on. Stay tuned for more posts on his progress.

I haven't published a post for awhile, mostly because I have been making snowmen like crazy! I have a few snowmen pictures to share. I also had a custom order to finish of a Hampshire pig and Suffolk Sheep. I have a picture of the pig. I finished the sheep the night before I needed to mail it so I didn't get a pictur of it. A grandmother wanted them made for her twin grandsons that show pigs and sheep. They will be receiving them for their birthday on December 19th. I also made a little bunny in a pink dress that sold right away so I made another one. I have a Pride of Dakota Holiday showcase that I am getting ready for this weekend. Trying to build up the snowman inventory. The big news is yesterday I sold my Needle Felted Cow! She has been my pride and joy since I made her in 2008. She was very detailed and was patterned after one of our own cows. I was actually pretty sad when I packaged her up today and put her in the mailbox. I guess that means it is time to make another cow. :-)

My 13 year old daughter helped me out with this bunny. She knit his little blanket for me.

Snowmen, Snowmen, Snowmen . . . .

Snowmen were one of the first things I made as a needle felting artist. The first snowmen didn't have hats and I was afraid to put mouths on them. It has been 4 or 5 years and I have developed goofy smiles and pointy hats for my snowmen. The most tedious part of the snowmen is needle felting the balls. What makes the snowmen different and exciting for me is that I get to spin. I love to spin wool, and rarely get the chance to do so. Spinning is very relaxing and peaceful. I found many beautiful colors and types of wool that I enjoy spinning along with my own Romney wool. I try to use different colors all the time to make it more exciting to knit the hats and scarves and see the colors come together. The last thing I do when making the snowman is to put on their face. This really brings them to life, they each turn out to have very different personalities!

I've been working on snowmen again, trying to build up a little inventory. My favorite part of making the snowmen is spinning the beautiful colors of wool and knitting the scarves and hats. It is something different than just needle felting and gives me a little break.

I found the latest beautiful colors for the hats and scarves at Greenwood Fiberworks on Etsy.

The rest of the snowman is made with wool from our sheep.

My new needle felted puppy! I wish I had a great story to tell on what inspired me to make this cute little creature but all I have is: I asked my daughter "What should I make next?" and she said you need to make a dog. I hunted down some cute pictures online and found some cute yellow lab puppy pictures. I made sure I had the right color wool and began sculpting.

I was asked recently if my Wool Bunnies were complete with legs and feet under their dresses. I had thought in the past of taking a picture under the dress, but that didn't seem appropriate. So I decided to share a picture of the naked bunny instead! :-) I make the entire bunny with legs feet and cute little white tail first and then I put the dress on. The dress does not come off. Also I take pictures of every bunny I make. So the bunny in the picture is what you would get. They all turn out very differently so I feel that this is very improtant.

We recently gathered all the calves up for their vaccinations. After spending an afternoon with them, I couldn't help but feel inspired to want needle felt a calf. I took several (about 50) pictures of them milling around in the pen. Hopefully I have a sufficient amount of pictures to correctly sculpt an adorable calf. I try to get shots from every angle, this makes it much easier to make them accurately.

Snowmen and snowmen kits are my top sellers! I decided I would get a jump on things this year and make a few snowmen before crunch time comes this fall. They can become a chore to make if I have to make too many in a row. Although selling them like crazy does motivate me in the fall.

The snowman is made entirely out of Romney wool that is from my own sheep. The hat and scarf is Merino wool. I purchased this beautiful colorway from Greenwood Fiberworks. (Autumn Flame colorway)
The wool was lovely to spin and looks beautiful on this snowman.

I used sticks from the trees in our yard for his arms. I usually use wire, but thought I would try something a bit more natural. My only fear is they could break during shipping.

Needle Felting:

Felting Needles are small straight needles with barbs cut along the shaft. When repeatedly pushed into a tuft of wool fibers, the barbs pull the fibers down, compressing and locking them together. The barbs are cut in one direction so that felting or matting together of the fibers will occur when the needle is pushed in and not when it is pulled out.

This felting process makes a large tuft of wool condense down into a more dense mass of wool. Stabbing the wool more in one spot will depress that area creating a dent or depression in the sculpture. Each piece takes many hours to complete and thousands of stabs with the felting needle.

All my pieces are made of solid wool that comes from my flock of Romney Sheep. They start with a tuft of carded wool and develop into an animal sculpture. We process the wool on our farm. Most of my pieces are inspired by our farm animals or animals in the wild. I first take or find many pictures of the animal from all angles. I then sculpt the animal out of wool as I study the pictures

Ducks

We have been watching the ducks arriving in our pond the past few weeks. We have a couple new ducks visiting this year, the Northern Shoveler and the Wilson's Phalarope. The Phalarope is a tiny bird that we have started to call a Mosquito Duck. The swim about so quick eating bugs of the surface of the water and they have pointy bills. I think the Shoveler is so interesting and pretty that I am in the process of felting one. It is taking me awhile as I am busy getting ready for our churches Vacation Bible School. I am the director and I am making all the back drops for it. We are also trying to finish up on our school subjects, so . . many projects in the works. It was a beautiful day today except maybe for the wind.

We now have 4 baby lambs, they are adorable of course. 3 black and one white. Only one female out of the bunch, so it looks like we will not be building our flock much this year. The first lamb of the year had died before I got out to the barn that morning. It was pretty big, and was a boy. One of my daughter's ewes (Betsy) had twins and we were able to get my ewe (Big Woolly) to adopt one of hers. Which is amazing since it had been 2 days since she had lost her lamb. They are all out of our new ram Lawrence. He has wonderful wool, and I can already tell on the baby lambs the difference in their wool. I put some of Lawrence's wool on ebay auction along with one of our yearling ewes' wool. It is such nice wool, that I would like to keep it all myself. I want to make my customers happy, so they get the best. :-) I recently needle felted a Chihuahua for my grandma. She is in a nursing home now and really misses her dog. I delivered it to her the other day, and she loved it. I am glad! It took me a couple weeks to make, just working in the evenings, it is pretty big. I had to make the body to fit the size eyes I had on hand. :-)

I am working on a bunny now. I know, I'm a little late for Easter, but the Chihuahua had to come first.

I am currently working on a white kitten. He is not cooperating very well as first his head was to big for his body, and then is nose was to long. He is slowly taking shape as he has changed from an albino moose into a white jackal and now mostly resembles a kitten. Hopefully he will be able to go on ebay in the next few days, as I have time to work on him.

My next project may be a cow or calf. We will start calving here around Easter, so in anticipation of that I plan to felt up a couple bovines. I have finally found the right color for our Simmental/Red Angus cattle, so I am excited to get started.

A beautiful sunny day today at 32 degrees. Spring is on it's way.
